Songs To Learn And Sing – Wonder Villains, Montage Populaire, Those Darlins, Ajimal And Jethro Fox.

Wonder Villains – “Ferrari.”

************************

Proof that sometimes bloggers don’t always discover music via the darkest corners of the internet or erm, via their email in- boxes. Sometimes we use traditional sources such as the radio. Despite catching part of their set when they supported New Young Pony Club a while back, we first really started paying full attention to Derry based power poppers Wonder Villains when this track was spun on  Steve Lamacq‘s round-table show. We were impressed, for some reason it’s youthful exuberance conjured up bizarre visions of Fight Like Apes battering the shit out of B*Witched and hey what’s not to like about that ?!

 Montage Populaire – “Reject Reinstall”

Montage Populaire’s début release, Not All Bombs Explode EP, comes out in March. The Southampton 5-piece recorded it an on old meat factory apparently yet this track sounds like The Arcade Fire fronted by Damon Albarn trapped in a haunted funfair during an episode of Scooby-Doo.  Its energy is irresistible  and it actually makes us want to pogo inanely like Plastic Bertrand, but in a slightly less camp way.

Those Darlins – “Screws Get Loose.”

Those Darlins

This is the lead track from their album of the same name. We’re thinking Maria Mc Kee and Lone Justice, we’re also thinking The Runaways fronted by Daisy Duke ( in those shorts! In fact if punchy garagey power pop with a southern blues tinged drawl is your bag, then Those Darlins may well meet all your musical requirements and lets be honest they’re certainly visually more aesthetically pleasing than ZZ Top.

Ajimal – “Footnote To Love”

After all that exuberance it’s time to embrace a more mellow, reflective vibe. Ajimal is singer songwriter Fran O’Hanlon and the haunting  ‘Footnote to Love [Part One]is the first release from Ajimal’s upcoming ‘Childhood’ EP which is produced by Mick Ross (Frankie & the Heartstrings, Soundtracks for a B-Movie, Let’s Buy Happiness) and features guests including Mick Ross, Little Comets’ Rob Coles and fellow North East singer-songwriter The Lake Poets.

  1. I’ll quash the urge to say ‘first’ regarding The Wonder Villains (I first played them on my radio show back in 2009, and they’re from my home turf), but it’s great to see them being featured on this blog and getting the recognition they deserve. Hopefully they will continue their track record of awesome material for the rest of the year.

    • No no “first” is good, say it loud say it proud ! It’s always nice to spot a band early on and see them do well. If all their songs are this much fun then Wonder Villains should do quite nicely…and
despite my reputation I do quite like fun on occasion 😉
