Track Of The Day – The Jackobins – Outside

The Jackobins – Outside

The Jackobins return with a brand new tune after a hugely successful festival season where they’ve wowed crowds up and down the country including, amongst others The Isle Of Wight Festival, Reading And Leeds, Kendall Calling and Liverpool Sound City. ‘Outside’ initially sounds like a readymade festival anthem, replete with coruscating guitars and 80s synths. Indeed one could almost imagine it featuring on anything from a John Hughes soundtrack to an ariel combat scene in which Tom Cruise dazzles his rivals into submission using his absurdly white teeth. It’s certainly a rousing fist clenching anthem delivered with passion and verve which also manages to capture the band’s live energy as well as demonstrating their ability to write hook-laden rock with a pop edge. However, the band describe the song as thematically their darkest one to date – “it deals with the seductive danger of escaping to somewhere that isn’t real, descending into your own fantasy in isolation. In a world dominated by social media people are becoming lonelier, and often those left on the outside become jealous observers of other peoples’ airbrushed lives.”
