Track Of The Day – Gene Pool – Television

Normally you’d expect a “track of the day” to be brand spanking new. But this one’s so good it deserves highlighting, and despite the fact its almost 10 months old it’s pretty new to us at least (finger on the pulse again!) Gene Pool is a Brighton based collective which began in traditional DIY style as the experimental bedroom project of guitarist Jack Pool and Sarah Ryan which began to take shape when drummer and producer Jamie Scarratt (Formerly of Kool-Aid Acid Test) joined the duo to help sonically finesse their vision.

‘Television’ showcases the band’s ability to cast their dark spell on the listener. It’s wistful and melancholic yet there’s a real edge to it. The band list a wide range of influences on their Spotify page but don’t really sound like any of them. They’ve done what the best artists do and taken these influence to forge them into something that is uniquely their own. They may still be quite a young band but they show more musical sophistication, nuance and innovation than some artists have managed to muster in an entire career.
