Chloe Slater Unveils “Mother Nature’s Killing Spree”
Bournemouth-born songwriter Chloe Slater is gearing up for her debut album Riot Youth, due October 9th via Stolen Juice (AWAL), and has marked the occasion with a new single, “Mother Nature’s Killing Spree.”
Love And Climate Collapse: Inside The Song
The song imagines the planet finally striking back at the humans who’ve spent decades neglecting it — world-ending stuff on paper, but at its core is something far smaller: two people falling for each other while everything collapses around them. It’s the third cut revealed from Riot Youth, joining earlier singles “UGLY” and “Southern Youth” — all pointing toward Chloe Slater’s most ambitious work yet.
I interviewed her here for Under The Radar recently, and she told me the song grew out of a period spent reading dystopian fiction, name-checking 1984, Fahrenheit 451 and The Handmaid’s Tale as reference points for the record’s apocalyptic framing (you can read the full conversation here).
Of the track, she says: “I wanted to capture that strange idea of carrying on as normal while everything falls apart around you. A time where consumerism has become almost a religion, adverts are our commandments, economic milestones our own mini forms of heaven on earth, influencers our gods. But underneath all of that, the chorus is really about something much more human. The idea that, when everything else disappears, love is still the thing we come back to. Lying cheek to cheek as the world ends.”
The Video: A First Date On The Last Day Of The World
The single arrives with a video built around the same premise: two strangers meeting on the last day of the world. “I wanted the visuals to reflect the dystopian, doomsday nature of the lyrics, so a first date on the last day of the world felt like the perfect idea,” Slater explains. “I’ve always loved shows like The End of the F***ing World and dystopian books and films, two people falling in love while the world falls apart. It was really wonderful to create my own little version of that.”
Riot Youth: Album, Tour Dates And What’s Next
At just 23, Slater has had a packed few months: her first BBC Radio 6 Music Maida Vale Session, a slot at Mad Cool Festival, and a trip home to Bournemouth to walk through the settings behind “Southern Youth,” where she made an unannounced return to the open mic night that hosted her first ever gig.
Since breaking through with the EPs You Can’t Put A Price On Fun and Love Me Please, she’s built up more than 15 million streams and consistent airplay on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music, alongside support slots for Role Model, Courtney Barnett, The Beaches, Alessi Rose and Pommelien Thijs.
She’ll bring the Riot Youth album to UK and European stages this November on her largest headline run to date, capped by a London date at Scala. Ticket sales have linked up with Music Declares Emergency’s Plus 1 scheme, with £1 from each one going toward the organisation’s climate work.
