Momma : “Speeding 72.”

We featured Momma earlier in the year and their latest release, “Speeding 72” comes ahead of news of their new album Household Name. “Speeding 72” neatly mixes the fuzzed-up grunge-pop of the Breeders with an early Juliana Hatfield ear for quirky shimmering melody.

Now based in Brooklyn, New York, after relocating from their hometown of Los Angeles, the duo consisting of singers/guitarists Allegra Weingarten and Etta Friedman upgraded from GarageBand and took their time writing and recording in a proper studio alongside multi-instrumentalist/producer Aron Kobayashi Ritch.

They are just back from touring with Wet Leg and describe the track thus ““Speeding 72” is probably the most collaboratively written song on the new record. We wanted it to be the sort of summertime anthem that you can turn on during a drive to impress your crush, The most important part of the production was setting the right mood to transport the listener. The song starts with Aron getting into his car (which is featured on the album cover), and then turning on the ignition.”

It’s chorus references Pavement’s “Gold Soundz” whilst Its Madeline Leshner and Zach Stone-directed video (below) as inspired in part by The Breakfast Club inspired, video.

The album, the band’s first for Lucky Number takes l lyrical inspiration from their own lives for the first time– a contrast to their previous concept album Two of Me which comprised made up of fictional vignettes dealing with morality, youth, and punishment. This time around, bygone heroes helped inspire a lyrical theme throughout Household Name: the rise and fall of the rock star, and the tropes and tribulations that come with that arc. The theme allowed the group to celebrate (and, in some cases, directly reference) icons like Nirvana, Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and the Breeders’ Kim Deal, while weaving in their own perspective and experiences.”
