Track Of The Day – Yassassin – Cherry Pie

After the spiky agitpop of Social Politics and the equally thrilling Pretty Face, Yassassin are clearly a band with a message who take no prisoners ( literally in their new video). They return with a beguiling mix of insouciant, beguiling garage psych in the form of Cherry Pie. It’s a tune that starts almost seductively before it spirals into an unhinged finale and once again marks them out as a band who we will be tipping for big things over the next year or so. There’s nothing contrived about their sound, it comes across as something that flows naturally from them and there’s an undercurrent of confrontation and menace in their oeuvre which makes for a thrilling listen.   They release the sort of music that makes you think … “wow I bet these are epic live” ( and we have it on good authority this is indeed the case!) Thankfully we’ll get a chance to catch them when they play Liverpool Psych Fest in a couple of months.

“‘Cherry Pie’ definitely has a dual attitude”, Yassassin explain. “It has always sounded dark and sleazy; it’s a confession to an obsession that in the end spirals into madness. The song embodies the mania and infatuation of when you’ve just met someone but you have no idea what’s going on in each other’s heads at all. It’s exciting but overwhelming and suddenly, passion can turn into irrationality. Everyone can relate to that feeling – being blinded by desire.”

Their debut EP Vitamin Y produced by Dave Allen (The Cure, Neneh Cherry) and mixed by Mike Moore (Liam Gallagher) and will be released on September 1. Shortly after its digital release, Vitamin Y will be released on a limited edition transparent blue 12” vinyl through the support of PRS Foundation Flash Funding and Key Production Group.
