Yassassin – Vitamin Y EP

The ubiquitous Robert Redford GIF, AKA ‘the smug yet righteous nod of approval‘ could have been invented specifically for that feeling of satisfaction you get when a new band who you have set great store by basically smash it out of the park on a fabulous debut EP.

That’s exactly what London based band Yassassin have done on their Vitamin Y EP. The band whose members hail from Sweden, Italy, England and Australia and have only been together a year and a half, took their name in the wake of Bowie’s death as a way of celebrating his life and his creativity (Yasssassin was written by David Bowie for the 1979 album Lodger.) The EP builds on the promise of their debut single ‘Social Politics’ and contains previous releases, the strident but joyfully empowering ‘Pretty Face’ and the mesmerising seductive yet sinister ‘Cherry Pie’ alongside two brand new tracks. The wonderful ‘Memaidiastic Personality Disorder’ sounds as deliciously deranged as the title suggests, and is apparently based on a dysfunctional relationship. It combines restless guitars with sort of off kilter hooks bands like the AuPairs used to excel at. The playful ‘Seasoned Like Chicken’ combines pop melodies with a punk attitude, crunching grungy guitar riffs and even a hint of the glam punk of the Psychedelic Furs and serves notice that Yassassin have now, quite rightly staked their claim to be regarded as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge over that last couple of years.  Look forward to seeing them at this year Liverpool Psych Festival tickets HERE .
