Track Of The Day – Dry Cleaning – ‘Sit Down Meal’

Following up their critically acclaimed ‘Sweet Princess’ Ep South London’s Dry Cleaning release ‘Sit Down Meal’ from their forthcoming second EP, ‘Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks.’ And once again the juxtaposition of vocalist Florence Shaw’s half-spoken half-sung delivery with the bands driving post-punk soundscapes proves to be a killer combination.

I caught them live at Birkenhead’s inaugural Future Yard festival a few weeks back and their performance was simply incredible. The contrast of Florence’s cool unflustered demeanour on stage with the intensity of the rest of the band’s performance was nothing short of mesmeric. ‘Sit Down Meal’ according to in Shaw is- ” set at the moment just after being suddenly dumped. You cling to details, things you did together and reel at their significance. If you smell their perfume on someone else you feel overwhelmed, but immediately and painfully aware of how lightning quick a relationship can evaporate into thin air.”

There’s an adroit directness to Dry Cleaning’s sound and ‘Sit Down Meal’ sees them expanding their sonic palette building spiralling angular guitars and driving percussion around Shaw’s often acerbic deadpan delivery … and it works beautifully
